Personal Statement-
Ever since I was little, I have had a passion for music, more the singing and performance aspect, making it an obvious choice for me to study at university. I would love nothing more than to study music performance and production to further my knowledge in the subject and allow me to eventually establish a career in this field. I always knew that music was my favourite thing as I was raised in a family who love a wide variety of genres. In primary school I participated in the choir which I loved, encouraging me to join the choir when I started high school. High school let me access so many things so I could develop with singing, doing private singing lessons as well as working with a band for the first time. It is something that I always put 100% put my effort into because it is something that I have always cared about and framed me into the person that I am today. I currently study Music Performance and Production in college. I enjoy the performance aspect most, as it allows me to be creative when on stage and portray a range of emotions in songs. I am excellent at meeting my deadlines and managing what I need to prioritise. I believe that my current college course will help me with the transition to university by getting the best potential out of me. I am consistently being challenged in my current classes and willing to improve myself and my work. Music is the type of subject where you can always work on what you're doing and improve over a matter of time and not settle for less. For our first gig at the playhouse in college I was less confident when it came to my stage presence and showing my confidence in my voice. Throughout the college year I improved vocally with the help of my singing teacher so by the time of the last gig of the year at the Philharmonic I had a new form of confidence in myself and allowed myself to experiment with harmonies and stage presence which is something I would like to constantly improve on. I am looking forward to the performance aspect of the course because working with other people in a band as a team is what I thrive on. The performance aspect is a way I can fully express myself on stage. I would also look forward to working in different environments for example a studio and creating music with new people. Something I would love to work on is my songwriting skills and finding my personal sound which I am always trying to do. Throughout college I have gained experience in songwriting, when we were given the task to write a song in bands where I took the role of writing lyrics with the help from my other band mate. We then went to Edwin Street Studios to record our songs which allowed me to gain even mor experience in that aspect expanding my knowledge on the recording process. Currently I am a receptionist at a dentist, my job has helped me improve my communication skills and allowed me to become more comfortable speaking to people I am unfamiliar with in different situation. It has also taught me staying organised is important, as well as always being ahead of schedule rather than behind is better so that everyone is pleased. When I was in high school, I completed two singing exams, the first one was grade four where I achieved a merit and the second one was my grade six exam where I achieved a distinction, I believe this shows my improvement throughout the years and that my consistency and hard work did pay off. University means to me that I will be putting myself out of my comfort zone which is something that I am usually hesitant about but feel ready for the next step in my education. Going to university will help me develop my career of choice by allowing me to gain more experience in the industry and gain traits and knowledge that employers seek. I know University will help me develop as a musician and as a person, so I can meet new people, gain new experiences, come out of my shell even more than I have and sharing my interests with people who have the same passion as me.
